After a long and cold winter the season begins with Quality Ocean

Good spot at high tide.

Was this the worst winter on record?  I’d say so.

My personal numbers show it but all you have to do is look at the average temperature.  It was just freezing all winter.  And I’m not talking about 32.  I’m talking about 20.  20 degrees is just way to cold to consider it.  It can be done, but how much fun are you really going to have?

But even though spring has come very late and we even had a snow hurricane just last week the sailing season has begun and it hasn’t been all that bad.  In the past three weeks I guess I’ve gotten six or seven good days, mostly on the ocean.  It has been cold but all except one of those days has been at or above 40 degrees.

Stepping back a bit if I look at my calendar it is clear that this was a hard winter.  All my days in December were in Florida.  My two days in January were probably the only two days that broke the 40 degree barrier and one of those days was among the best days I have ever had.  But still it only two days.  And February was a complete blank.  No days on the water.

But March was pretty good.  It was full of crap weather but I got 7 solid days so I’m not complaining.  Hopefully a bad winter will lead into a good Spring and a solid Summer.

West is the Best on Nantucket

Is Madequecham the best beach on West in the entire East Coast of the United States?  I can’t prove it with facts but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it turns out to be true.  Its just the nature of geography that West sucks at most East Coast beaches.  But not Nantucket.  Here West is perfect sideshore at Madequecham and often is accompanied by quality surf.  It fires fairly often and when it is on you can count on it.  You don’t have to rush to sail a solid west day.  Its going to be there.

On a day like yesterday, when Madequecham is firing at its best you can satisfy two needs.  Scare yourself on the outside and enjoy unlimited quality hacks in the shore break.  Its really good.  Best on Nantucket and easily in the top ten on the East Coast.  It has to be.  I’ll bet it is the best spot.

070 ‘Sconset Surf

Very interesting session (10/9/2013). It was blowing 070. Tom Nevers was slightly side off. I launched there and worked upwind to get out from under the bluff. Past the houses the wind was much better but there was no real surf. There isn’t really a sand bar there to create a break but water was moving around.
I kept working upwind, along Low Beach Rd. and past the Loran station. There was white water upwind. When I got into it it was much better than I had hoped. Kind of chaotic in places but head high and exciting. Compressed in some areas and spread out and open in others It was the best sailing I’ve had in quite a while. Plus it was very out there.

Sconset Surf Session

Its interesting because when you drive along Ocean Ave in the summer on flat days you can see whitewater out there.  It must be something with how the currents meet.  Because it was like just one section of surf surrounded by flat water.   It was pretty cool.  Next time that number comes up I’m going to scout out a closer launch.  Perhaps on Low Beach Rd or even in front of the Summer House.  That is basically where I was sailing.  I’d prefer to sail upwind to the spot than down.

Kiteboarding Regatta – August 11

Unfortunately this didn’t go down due to a total lack of wind.  Next year we need a proper waiting period.

The third annual Kiteboard/Windsurf Regatta as part of the Nantucket Race Week will be held on August 11.  Last year’s event went off in excellent fashion with 17 participants and great wind in the harbor.  Hopefully we will get good wind again.  Sign up for the race using the link below. Kiteboard Race off of Bass Point

Kiteboard Race off of Bass Point

This info may be updated in the future but I believe the competitors meeting will be at 1pm at Bass Pt.  There will be boats to shuttle people over to Bass from Pocomo as necessary.  Interest in kiteboard racing is growing dramatically and this upcoming race will probably be even bigger than last year.  Sign up early because registration is limited to 25 competitors.

Here is article from last year’s event: Kiteboard Regatta 2012

This is an unfinished article I wrote as a “lessons learned” document after helping to run the race last year.

This is another idea for a different kiteboarding competition.  It is for a wave competition but of course the format and planning could just as well be used for freestyle competition.  Last year I thought it would be cool to have a throw down in the pond after the racing, but truthfully I was wiped out.  It is pretty tiring doing an afternoon of racing.  So the freestyle or wave competition would be better as a separate event.

Bass Point Pond Party!

Ollie Up

Ollie Up

This super fun session capped the week with the Raith crew pulling out the new and improved PVC Rail and setting it up at Bass Point.

It was a classic pond party with a solid sea breeze and low tide at 5:30pm.  The late afternoon kiting was just killer.  Solid 10-12 and pretty perfect butter conditions.  There was quite a bit of west in it but it still worked at Bass.  Of course it got a bit junky on the way inside but on the plus side it was only one run back to Pocomo.  A straight shot.

Super fun.  Check these photos by Benjamin Raith

Outstanding Run of Wind for the Holiday Week

Archive Photo

Bass Point Pond Party - Archive Photo

While a lot of the locals had to squeeze it in around one of the busiest work weeks of the year, anyone who wanted to get wet this week easily got their fill of wind.  The run basically started last Friday with some solid south and decent surf and continued through the week with pretty much classic summer conditions at Pocomo and Bass Point.

I didn’t get out every day but I think that kiting happened every day, at least on the inside where the Pocomo Wind Machine was turned on big time.  Classic sea breeze conditions held for the entire week and I’m sure many awesome pond sessions were had.

The prevalent high pressure system looks to remain in place for the foreseeable future so hopefully the good conditions will persist for a while.  A couple of days this week are showing in the red so here we go.  Nice!

US Secretary of State now on Naish Kites

How many kiters can say that they sailed with the nation’s top diplomat?

A group of Nantucket kiters, island visitors and assorted Euros can now make that claim after John Kerry ripped a butter session at Pocomo yesterday.

Local curmudgeon Jeff Morash is Mr. Secretary’s go to Nantucket Guy and was on hand to assist.  Most guys were on 9s or 12s.  It was dead low tide and quality butter was evident behind the point.  Secretary Kerry powered it on a 14 Park.  Kerry tends to switch up his quiver every season.  This is the first time he has been on Naish as far as I know.  I didn’t catch what type of board he was riding.

Quality fun was had by all.

Chicken Loop Stopper on Naish Bar Saved Me

I always wondered what the purpose of the stopper on the chicken loop line on my Naish bars was for.  Now I know.

Last weekend at Madaket I was on my 9 in decent surf.  I was about 20 minutes into my second session and on the outside.  I heard a “pop” and something felt a little weird.  My chicken loop line had broken in half.  But I was still riding and able to control my kite.  I quickly gybed and sailed in.  Ric was rigging.  He landed my kite and I switched to my backup bar.  No real problem.

The chicken loop is one line that is looped up to the center lines fitting and then back down through the bar to the loop.  The stopper is on one side of the line just below the center line swivel fitting.  So that locked against the center line piece and one line held it until I got in.

The interesting thing to me is that there are two ropes that wear and could break.  For me the correct one broke and the stopper worked.  If the other had broken it would have been “bye bye center lines”.  So I got lucky on that one.

Idea for an Event

I posted this on Masskiting.com and got zero response.  I still think it is a good idea.

Idea for an event:

I have been thinking about an idea for an event and I’m wondering if anyone would be interested in something like this.

Its called the NE Kitesurfing Open and it happens during the month of October an an ocean sailing site in New England.  The waiting period is the weekends of October and certain launches will be possible sites based on a pre set required forecast.  For example where I live I can guarantee that if the offshore forecast says W (270) 15 G 25 for 2 days there will be epic kitesurfing conditions at Madequecham.  There are many places that we could document ahead of time so that everyone knows the criteria.

People who are interested get on a list and  each weekend (during the waiting period) on Friday someone makes a call to go or no go and puts out the word.

The event will use the same system as the Triple S, rider judged.  So we will hit it on a Saturday or Sunday for a 4 hour session and at the end announce the winners.  Probably have a few beers, whatever.

Also, there will be a Kite race regatta as part of the Nantucket Race Week (Aug 10-18 2013).  Last year it was the first weekend on Saturday.  The registration is on line at : http://www.nantucketraceweek.org  but I didn’t see any specific info there yet.  Last year we had a miraculous convergance of wind and sailors and had an awesome event.  There were 17 competitors entered and the event will be capped at 25 (due to its location).  If lightning strikes twice it will be awesome.

Sky

It is barely worth having an event without the conditions.
