Last summer a miraculous conjunction of weather and scheduling occured and the Race Week Kiteboarding Race went off in an awesome fashion. My role was to help run the race and I was also able to participate in the race. Helping to run the race made a difference in how well my result in the regatta turned out. The only thing I knew about running a kiteboard race was what I have read in different magazines and being on the water at Crissy Field for two afternoons during their race days.
We were learning as we went and we made a bunch of quick modifications as the day went on. The first race went off with the race committee being on Bass Point and the starting line was between a mark and a flag on the beach. However they were downwind from the starting line so they ended up giving signals that no one could hear. So for the second race we put a boat at the boat end of the starting line, which is pretty much standard operating procedure for sailing races and that issue was resolved. Much of what I learned doing this regatta goes under the heading of “It should be run exactly as a normal sailing regatta.”
For last summer’s race we got great SW wind in the afternoon. People were able to ride mostly 12s I would say. It lined up perfectly to set up a modified triangle course using two chanel markers and one set mark and having the start just upwind of bass point and the finish on the leeward side of Bass Point. So Bass point was right in the middle of the weather leg. It worked out really well for staging. It would be perfect if it could always set up like that. I wouldn’t have the finish on land again. I think it would be better to just set up a normal finish line just below Bass Point. Of course we can’t always plan on SW wind so we have to be able to set the course completely and then we woud just have a normal modified triangle with start/finish line in the middle. I think it would be smart to have the start/finish line as close to Bass Point as possible because its good to put your kite down between races if possible.
Another mistake I made in the first race was thinking it would be better to set the starting line looser than normal. Basically the line wasn’t square and it favored the boat end. I thought it would for kiting but again it turns out to be better to just set up everything like a standard dingy course. One of the guys from Community Sailing was trying to tell me this but I had to learn it for myself.
Update: The NE forecast under-predicted how good a day it turned out to be. Solid NE from about 1 to 6 pm. I’m sure everyone who wanted to got a good session yesterday. Nice!
What a brutal run it has been with awesome weather for soccer practice but nothing for Kiting. Even tomorrow’s NE forecast is pretty weak. But right now it is all there is to hope for.
Its been a very satisfying week for kitesurfing on Nantucket. Four straight days of South West and West wind and really fun surf makes for a bunch of happy guys I would think.
The two best days were Tuesday and Wednesday when we got just the classic solid West wind and really punchy waist high surf. I personally sailed Madaquecham both of those days and it was really fun. Solid 9 both days and I probably could have been on my 7 if I wanted to rig down. The beach there is getting a little smaller but there is still enough space to get up and down even when riding alone.
It was dead west both days and that wind just sets up perfectly out front at Madequecham. I just hope it continues like this. Bring it!!
We had previously mentioned in these pages that local up and comer Xander Raith has joined the Big Winds Kiteboarding Team. We caught up with Xander recently for a quick interview.
NantucketKiteboarding.com: Yo Xander. Congratulations on joining the Big Winds team.
NK: How would you describe your riding style?
Xander Raith: I would describe it as wakestyle.
NK: You have been on North in the past. What gear will you be riding this season?
XR: This year I will be riding the North Gambler and the North Vegas kites.
NK: What are your responsibilities on the team? Will you be doing any competitions or events? How will you represent for Big Winds?
XR: My responsibilities are rocking North gear and Big Winds apparel. I definitely want to do some contests. I don’t know when or where but if I was offered I would definitely do it! I will rep Big Winds by riding there gear. Big Winds is also going to help me through their social media as my riding improves. They want more vids and pics…unhooked!
NK: What are your goals for this season?
XR: This year I really want to make a slider for the pond and work on tricks with that. I also want to ride more waves and get more unhooked tricks.
NK: How can your fans follow you? Are you on the intertubes?
XR: If I have any fans, I just recently made a Facebook and Instagram and people can follow me on that. I am not sure what intertubes are but if you mean Vimeo and Youtube then yes?
NK: Thanks for your time. Is there anything else you want to say or anyone you want to give a shout out to?
XR: Yeah big shout out to Big Winds, North, and Andrew Pearl for getting me started. My dad for ditching work and taking me out kiting and thanks Sky for the interview!

Whats your Dream Session?: A flat water session in the pond when it is really windy and warm out or a clean day on the ocean.
What is a “Tape Deck”?: I have no idea, does it play music? If so, that’s what my dad uses to get hyped before a session……..ha ha.
Jeff and I just killed an outstanding session at Madaket. I really think the setup here on NW (310) is just about as good as it gets here.
Today was 2-3 foot clean shore break. Super fun on 9.
Excellent.
Local kiteboarder Xander Raith was picked up as a team rider for the Big Winds team out of The Gorge.
Details are scarce at this time but what we have been able to learn is that Greg Raith was not picked up for the team. When reached for comment Greg commented that he will still be “picking up after the team”.
New video on YouTube by Benj Raith.
Yeah, its all Xander.
The last time I sailed it was a pretty serious day. While I was driving to the beach I called the airport and the wind phone said SW @ 26. I thought “Perfect 9” but it turned out to be so much more windy. The next day I heard a discussion on the radio about how it was some meteorologic condition in which the jet stream is forced much lower than normal. So it resulted in a really strong surface wind. Gusting to 40 for most of the day.
Needless to say I was way over on my 9. That wouldn’t be so bad but the surf conditions were also pretty serious. I was a bit freaked out when I came in to rig down to my 7.
I had a brand new bar in the truck so I switched to it when I rigged my small kite. Seemed like a good plan and I felt much better on the water with the 7 than earlier. The surf was up and it took me 3 attempts to get out but still I felt a lot better.
Then on my first run in I picked off a really small one for my first bottom turn. I figured I would ease into it. Turned out to be a decent move because as I turned toward the wave my chicken loop quick release pinged off and my kite just went away. I was still attached to the safety but there was no way I was relaunching in those conditions. Fortunately I didn’t really get worked too bad. I got lucky. I made it in without further incident but I felt like today the ocean really kicked my ass. Looking back now I should have gone back out but at that time it seemed smarter to call it a day.
Insane conditions last week. Really strong wind and surf that was easily in the well overhead range. I really felt like getting worked could be really bad. A couple of days later on the radio that there was a strange weather condition in which the jet stream was pushed lower towards the surface.
Check out the photo gallery “Big Surf – Jan 31, 3013 – Tom Nevers by Sasha.
At around 11 am the rain stopped and the airport said something like SW 25. I rigged my 9. I knew it was too big and I was right. I was super over. Rigged down to my 7 and that was more manageable. Still the surf was sick. It took me three tries to get out. The whitewater was insurmountable.
Bad day for equipment issues. Sasha’s photos make my session look a lot better than it was. And he took those before getting in his own epic downwinder from Madaket to Tom Nevers. Nice! That is sick!
