Insane
Downwinders
South Shore Monster:
Sconset to Madaket – longer than you would think. Can be great
on a south east when there is a decent swell. The beach in ‘Sconset
is pretty big, in front of the Summer House. Your normal SE is pretty
on shore there so it isn’t a great launch, plus it is insanely
confused at the point, when you get around the point it is more
downwind and the waves clean up as well. When we did ‘Sconset
to Tom Nevers the best surf conditions were at the Tom Nevers end
point.
Note: you have to go well off shore when you are going past
the airport. Observe the guarded beaches in season.
Harbor Bomb:
Jetties to Wauwinet – perfect summer downwinder on a thermal
day. Best in SouthWest (240)
Jetties is a sketch launch on SW. The wind is off-shore and coming
over the Cliff so it is junky. However you can launch on the inside
in the vicinity of the sailing concession. There is a swim area
as you go more toward the jetty, so you have to kind of slot between
that area (also boat launch) and the moorings. Then once you are
off bomb it down around the first point.
You can hit at least five great point ponds on the way down. Landing
at Wauwinet is usually no problem. It is a little on-shore but if
you land more down towards the last houses there is plenty of beach.
You can’t leave a car at the Wauwinet parking lot nor in the
parking lot for the ranger shack, but you can leave one on the road
right past the ranger station.
Summer trick: In the evening there are usually plenty of cabs dropping
off at the Wauwinet so you can easily get a ride, make sure to have
$16 bucks in your car.
